The ZNU-Standard is a certified standard for sustainable business management that takes a holistic view of the three areas of sustainability (the environment, the economy and society) and can be used by companies in all industries.
During your certification, our experts assess the practical implementation of your sustainability management system. In this respect, we consider the improvement process which is implemented and the application of the materiality matrix and the derived sustainability activities in the areas of the environment, the economy and society.

The ZNU-Standard Driving Sustainable Change was developed by the ZNU Research Institute – Center for Sustainable Leadership – at the Faculty of Economics and Society of the University of Witten/Herdecke.
The sustainability management system is based on the environmental, social and economic fields of action as well as the fields of action at the practical level. In terms of the environmental level, for example, the use of energy is examined, while at the social level, compliance with human rights and occupational safety are assessed. Existing certifications, such as those according to ISO 50001 or ISO 14001, are also included in the audit as evidence in the evaluation of the ZNU requirements.
The goal of the standard is to implement a sustainable process of improvement in the company. The company should communicate openly with its stakeholders on the implementation of goals and measures on the basis of the analysis of the specific fields of action. The ZNU-Standard takes into account not only the requirements of other standards (such as ISO 50001 or ISO 14001) but also communication processes, as well as the company´s values and goals. A total of 44 requirements provide a framework for orientation and form the basis for a sustainability management system which is designed to help companies of all sizes gradually become more sustainable and to set a continuous improvement process in motion.
