Questions and answers
DIN EN ISO 14001 is a standard of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that has been in force since 1996. It helps companies and organizations to align their environmental management with a global standard. The aim is to improve environmental protection and integrate it optimally into the economic and social environment. Following a comprehensive revision, the current version of this standard was published in 2015.
The demand for resources is increasing worldwide. More and more companies are competing for increasingly scarce natural resources. At the same time, public environmental awareness and legislative pressure have increased in recent years. Terms such as “sustainability” have long since become decisive criteria for quality and credibility for customers, partners and the public.
On the other hand, laws on environmental protection, resource conservation and efficiency are also becoming ever stricter. An environmental management system that is tested and certified in accordance with an internationally recognized standard such as DIN EN ISO 14001 provides an ideal basis for this. This allows you to save resources, rationalize processes on an ongoing basis and meet legal and economic requirements.
The international standard DIN EN ISO 14001 does not set any absolute requirements for an environmental management system and is therefore flexible. In principle, therefore, any company or organization can be certified regardless of size, location, sector or ecological or social environment. Hundreds of thousands of companies and organizations worldwide have already taken advantage of this opportunity.
In order for your company to be certified in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14001, you must first integrate efficient environmental management into your operating processes. This includes, among other things
  • Your own environmental policy (written down and known to all employees)
  • A critical review and inventory of your processes with regard to environmental criteria
  • Defined environmental goals and their implementation in an environmental program
  • A written and effective environmental management system
  • A documented procedure for an internal audit/inspection according to environmental criteria
Certification of your environmental management system in accordance with the international standard offers you a whole range of benefits, including
  • Greater economic efficiency through savings in resources
  • Recognition of sources of error in your processes, exploitation of potential for improvement
  • More efficient processes and higher qualification of employees in environmental issues
  • Greater trust among customers, authorities, partners and the public
  • More sustainable processes, products and services
  • Minimization of waste and pollutants
  • Greater legal certainty, recognition and reduction of liability risks
  • Timely implementation of future environmental requirements
Our experts will provide you with comprehensive support during the audit of your environmental management system. These are the individual phases of the audit process:
1. information
Project meetings between our experts and you
2. documentation review
Preparation for certification including document review
3. certification audit
Examination of your environmental management system by our auditors directly on site
4. issuance of certificate
Receipt of the DEKRA seal of approval after successful certification
5. regular surveillance audits
Annual monitoring of the implementation of the requirements in practice
6. re-certification
After three years, the cycle starts again with re-certification
The international standard is intended to permanently combine environmental protection and economic interests. By promoting an internal environmental policy and actively engaging your employees with the topic, an ecological awareness is created within the company. At the same time, the management level takes on more responsibility for environmental management and its successful implementation in day-to-day operations. The success of the measures introduced can be measured on an ongoing basis using key figures. In this way, the processes at your site are sustainably optimized and continuously adapted. This can range from the environmental compatibility of processes, products and services to communication, data processing and mobility within the company.
Yes, the certification of your environmental management system is compatible with other management system standards. For example, with the quality management standard ISO 9001 . This means that DIN EN ISO 14001 can be easily integrated into your existing management system at any time. This also opens up the possibility of combined certification.
Important note
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has revised its management system standards to better address climate change, motivating companies to take action and make sustainable improvements.
This extension affects all ISO Type A management system standards, including ISO 14001, and requires certified organizations to integrate climate change into their planning and consider the needs of their stakeholders. Implementation of these new requirements is required immediately and will be monitored by us as the certification body. Non-compliance may result in non-conformity.
