Your REDcert Certification at a glance
The REDcert-EU and REDcert² forms of certification are association-based certification systems. They were developed in response to the increased need for certification in the field of sustainability and the environment. The certification systems are by now the best known standards throughout the EU. The REDcert-EU is the standard for the sustainable use of biomass, bioenergy and biofuels. REDcert² applies, in particular, to the sustainable use of agricultural raw materials in the food and animal feed industry as well as the use of biomass material in the chemical industry. Certification gives companies in these sectors easier access to the European biofuel markets and the associated subsidies.

The sustainable use of raw materials is becoming increasingly important. It is therefore also a political objective for the European Union to expand the use of alternative and renewable sources of energy, such as biomass and waste. The goal is to reduce emissions of harmful greenhouse gases (CO2) over the long term and to protect the climate.
For this reason, REDcert GmbH was founded in 2010 by leading associations and organizations in the German agricultural and biofuel industry. The REDcert standard they developed has been recognized by the European Commission under the Renewable Energy Directive, or RED II for short.
