New quality standard in logistics – update to VDA 6.8

Dec 02, 2024 Audit

On September 25, 2024, the new VDA volume 6.8 ”Supply chain” was approved by the VDA Quality Management Committee (QMA). This is a groundbreaking standard that represents a significant advancement in logistics.

In collaboration with leading automotive companies, Tier 1 suppliers and logistics service providers, an industry standard has been created that consolidates the previous customer-specific catalogs into a comprehensive set of rules. This is the first time that a uniform and comprehensive set of rules for auditing logistics processes is available, which at the same time takes into account the requirements of the logistics self-assessment MMOG/LE (Materials Management Operations Guideline/Logistics Evaluation). It therefore creates a real opportunity to achieve a reduction in workload by integrating and standardizing specific checklists and OEM requirements.
With around 180 logistics-related questions and 750 minimum process requirements, this new standard will enable automotive manufacturers, suppliers and logistics service providers to standardize, stabilize, optimize and secure their processes. This means that logistics processes occupy a prominent position throughout the entire value chain.
Objectives of the new “VDA 6.8 Process Audit Supply Chain”:
  • Identifying system vulnerabilities
  • Minimizing risks in supply chains
  • Improving logistics capabilities for internal and external partners
The new VDA volume 6.8 makes integration into the QM system of a company possible, and thereby also a contribution to the fulfillment of the requirements of VDA 6.2.
VDA 6.8 process audit supply chain thus closes the gap that has arisen due to the omission of service-related questions in VDA 6.3.
With its scope of application, which extends from the contract award phase, through series production to after-sales, it generally covers the following areas of application:
  • Potential analysis for the selection of suppliers for logistics services
  • Auditing of suppliers/logistic service providers for logistical processes along the process chain (e.g., warehousing, module assemblies & sequencing, packaging logistics, spare parts logistics and transport logistics)
  • Implementation of internal audits of logistics processes
  • Auditing of logistics processes in aftersales

The questionnaire is structures according to the Turtle method. This consistently supports a culture of further development of “process ownership.”I would like to encourage you to familiarize yourself with the content requirements of VDA 6.8 as a new quality standard in logistics.
