DEKRA Certification GmbH: Provisional Approval as a Certification Body for RFNBOs

Apr 03, 2025 Audit / Sustainability

A major step forward for the sustainable hydrogen industry: DEKRA Certification GmbH has been provisionally approved by the German Environment Agency as a certification body for renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs). This is an important development for companies that focus on sustainable energy and follow European climate goals.

Certification as a Key Part of the Energy Transition
On February 24, 2025, DEKRA Certification GmbH received approval to certify companies under the 37th Ordinance for the Implementation of the Federal Immission Control Act (37. BImSchV) using the internationally recognized ISCC EU system. This allows companies to certify their hydrogen production and other sustainable fuels under a leading certification system.
Earlier, on December 19, 2024, the European Commission officially recognized ISCC EU as a voluntary certification system for RFNBOs, recycled carbon fuels (RCFs), and forest biomass. This highlights the importance of independent certification bodies in ensuring a sustainable and transparent energy market.
Why This Matters for Companies and the Hydrogen Industry
RFNBO certification is essential for bringing climate-friendly energy sources into the market. Companies benefit from:
  • Certification that meets the requirements of EU Directive (EU) 2018/2001 (RED II).
  • Clear legal guidelines, helping them plan and invest with confidence.
  • Easier market access for RFNBOs and RCFs through a globally recognized certification system.
DEKRA Certification GmbH has many years of experience in certification and supports companies with expert knowledge.

Reliable certification is the key to bringing climate-friendly energy sources to the market. Our expertise ensures transparency, investment security, and trust in sustainable innovations. Together, we are driving the energy transition forward!

Hydrogen as a Future Energy Source
A reliable energy transition needs clear sustainability and verifiable standards. Hydrogen plays a key role, especially in industry, transportation, and energy storage. It helps reduce carbon emissions in energy-intensive sectors and provides a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.
The provisional approval of DEKRA Certification GmbH as an independent certification body ensures that companies receive trustworthy sustainability certificates. This is crucial for achieving European climate goals and growing the hydrogen industry.
The German Environment Agency will accept certifications from voluntary certification systems if they receive a positive technical review from the European Commission. This supports the expansion of hydrogen infrastructure and builds trust in sustainable energy solutions.
