New standards for quality and safety in logistics

The increasing challenges in the logistics industry require reliable solutions. The update of the IFS Logistics standard to Version 3 addresses this very requirement. It makes it easier for your company to work with the standard and enables the optimum implementation of the set requirements.

An overview of the key changes

  • Reduced requirements and an optimized protocol for the improved implementation of the standard
  • New scope for animal feed and two other logistics services (fruit/vegetable sorting, labeling)
  • Extended scope of validity of IFS Logistics and clear regulations for storage/transport and logistics organization
  • Partially outsourced logistics services are now included in the standard

With IFS Logistics Version 3, we present a standard updated to current regulations, market expectations and the latest trends. IFS has developed this version with international experts from the logistics and food industry, retail and wholesale companies and certification bodies. Their input and expertise ensure that the requirements meet the needs of the market.

Stephan Tromp, IFS Managing Director
The IFS Logistics standard assesses quality and safety in various areas of logistics, such as transport, storage and distribution. Many companies rely on IFS Logistics certificates, which prove the implementation of exacting procedures and processes in logistics. With the update to Version 3 of the standard, the requirements were reduced, the protocol was optimized and the structure was improved. Explanations and extensions in the areas of application also facilitate the implementation and management of the standard on the part of all participants.

Essential aspects of audits: From IFS Star status to the on-site rule

  • IFS Star status
At least one in three audits must be performed as an unannounced audit. The new IFS Star status identifies precisely these audits with the goal of highlighting certified companies.
  • B Score
The B score is now classified as a non-conformity once again to allow for continuous improvements.
  • 50% on-site rule
At least 50% of the audit shall be performed on site. A reduction is possible in certain situations that are defined in the standard.
  • Alignment of the standard
The standard is aligned with the Codex Alimentarius and ISO/IEC 17065 as well as the benchmarking requirements of the GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative), and complies with ISO 22003-2.
