Joining Forces for Credible Climate Action: DEKRA Joins ICR's VVB Network

Apr 15, 2025 Sustainability / Audit
DEKRA Certification GmbH is now part of the International Carbon Registry’s (ICR) network of accredited Validation and Verification Bodies (VVBs). This partnership sends a clear signal for more transparency, quality, and credibility in the voluntary carbon market.
Why This Matters
The voluntary carbon offset market has long faced criticism: often lacking clear standards, independent verification, and traceable climate impact. This is precisely where ICR's system comes in – built on strict requirements, digital traceability, and external oversight.

Our partnership with the International Carbon Registry further strengthens this system. As an independent conformity assessment body, we see it as our responsibility to build trust in climate action – not through promises, but through verifiable results. What connects us with ICR is a shared commitment to enabling transparent, scientifically sound projects that make a real difference.

Strict Standards – for Real Impact
By mandating the application of ISO 14064-2, ICR establishes a clear framework to ensure that projects are only issued carbon credits when they deliver measurable, additional, and lasting climate benefits.
ICR uses a multi-layered system to carefully assess what’s known as “additionality” – that is, whether a project truly delivers new emissions reductions or would have happened anyway. DEKRA evaluates these criteria independently and transparently. These principles go far beyond formalities: they are essential to prevent greenwashing and ensure the integrity of the entire voluntary carbon market.
Where Technology Meets Trust: Digitalization & Blockchain
A unique feature of ICR is its fully digital platform. From project application and validation to the issuance of carbon credits (known as ICCs), the entire process is digital – securely documented using blockchain technology. This ensures maximum transparency: every issued credit can be traced back to its origin.
A Shared Goal: Building Trust
Only when society has confidence in climate measures will people be willing to get involved – politically, economically, and personally. The partnership between DEKRA and ICR builds that trust through transparent procedures, high standards, and independent verification.

We are excited to welcome DEKRA Certification GmbH to our network of accredited Validation and Verification Bodies. With their extensive track record in quality assurance and environmental compliance, DEKRA brings valuable expertise to our ecosystem. Their commitment to sustainability aligns seamlessly with ICR’s values, and we are excited about this partnership.

Guðmundur Sigbergsson, CEO of ICR

We are excited to partner with the International Carbon Registry to list validated and verified climate protection projects. ICR stands out as one of the few carbon registries in the voluntary carbon market that mandates ISO 14064-2 as the foundation for greenhouse gas reduction and removal project reporting — a standard we fully support. Evidence-based, transparently proven climate actions are the key to maintaining public trust in the effectiveness of climate protection – and that trust is essential for both political and economic action.
