Energy efficiency measure audit

In accordance with DIN EN 17463 ValERI and confirmation of the ecological compensation

The pressure to reduce COâ‚‚ emissions is constantly increasing, as slowing down global warming can only be achieved through a sustainable reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to the expansion of the use of renewable energy sources, increasing energy efficiency plays a central role in minimizing energy consumption, conserving resources and at the same time reducing environmental pollution.

Requirements and incentives for improving energy efficiency have been part of the national and European climate protection strategy for years.
Note: The European standard DIN EN 17463:2021-12 – Valuation of energy-related investments (ValERI), published at the end of 2021, provides a framework for assessing investments in the energy sector. It defines how information is to be collected, calculated, analyzed and documented to enable informed decisions based on NPV calculations.

Economically beneficial

Since the end of 2021, in Germany there has been an obligation to implement economically beneficial energy efficiency measures or even further climate protection or decarbonization measures if companies want to benefit from state incentives. This is called “ecological compensation".
This is where DIN EN 17463 comes in, a European standard that sets out requirements for evaluating energy efficiency measures with regard to their financial profitability. This provides companies with a profound basis for deciding whether to implement measures in the field of energy management and saving in an economically and environmentally meaningful way.

Integration of DIN EN 17463 into legal regulations and interaction with energy management systems

DIN EN 17463 is now anchored in various laws and regulations. These require companies to systematically assess energy-related investments and implement economically feasible measures to improve energy efficiency. The results of these assessments or corresponding self-declarations must be examined by bodies authorized to carry out audits in the context of so-called confirmation procedures. It is also indispensable for calculating measures in energy management systems such as ISO 50001. This is because DIN EN 17463 supplements ISO 50001 by providing a standardized method for evaluating and documenting energy-related measures.
Energy efficiency measures in the context of the CSRD and the Green Deal
Energy efficiency measures are closely linked to the requirements of the European Green Deal and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). The CSRD requires companies to report on their sustainability strategies, including the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Measures that are economically evaluated with DIN EN 17463 not only support the achievement of ecological targets, but also facilitate compliance with reporting obligations.
In addition, regulations such as the Energy Efficiency Act (Energieeffizienzgesetz) in Germany and the taxonomy for sustainable activities promote sustainable investments and provide companies with incentives to improve their climate footprint. Energy efficiency is thus a key lever for companies to meet environmental, regulatory and economic requirements.

Your energy efficiency measures audit

Our on-site audit of your energy efficiency measures includes not only the economic classification of all measures from the action plan in accordance with the requirements of DIN EN 17463, but also an examination of the appropriateness of the energy efficiency measures, compliance with legal requirements and how effective the management system is with regard to the processes for improving energy performance and their correct determination. We can carry out the audit either in combination with your annual ISO 50001 audit as on-top service or as an independent audit service. After a successful audit, we will provide you with the required evidence and confirmations of the self-declarations.
The audit process in detail
Relevant laws and regulations in the context of DIN EN 17463
The Energy Efficiency Act became effective in November 2023 and establishes for the first time a clear legal framework for increasing energy efficiency by setting concrete targets for reducing energy consumption.
In addition to increasing energy efficiency in accordance with EnEfG Sections 8 and 9, measures for the collection and evaluation of waste heat are also a central topic. According to EnEfG Section 17, companies are obliged to publish their waste heat data and savings on the platform for waste heat of the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control, in German Bundesamt fĂĽr Wirtschaft und Ausfuhrkontrolle (BAfA) from January 1, 2025 onwards. The platform for waste heat is intended to promote the exchange of information between regional heat producers and consumers.
In addition to the public sector, which is an important role model due to the high energy consumption of its properties, the regulations also affect companies.
